LESSON PLAN: Digital Citizenship

This week is all about Digital Citizenship, which is absolutely fitting as my work and my students' work will revolve around digital and online media creation. The following is a lesson plan structured for middle school students to learn and understand that they have the ability to create clean and safe material that is still engaging and entertaining!

This lesson plan will prompt and engage students in:

Determining the central ideas or conclusions of a text; providing an accurate summary of the text distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.2.)

as well as..

Recognizing the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world, and acting/modeling in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical. (2 - Digital Citizen)

and lastly..

Communicating clearly and expressing themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to reaching their goal. (6 - Creative Communicator)

The lesson plan below is broken down into two sections, Pen & Paper and Creator, and each section then followed by multi-part processes.

PEN & PAPER --

Part 1 : In assigned small groups, students will read this article on how to be a good digital citizen. After completing the reading, have each group brainstorm, agree on, and write down two key elements they learned from the reading. When all groups have completed both the reading and writing portions, allow each team to share their insights with the class.

Part 2 : Have the students individually complete this short assessment covering the ideas read and discussed on being a good digital citizen.

CREATOR--

Part 1 : To spark your students' creativity, share this video for a creative and unconventional take on teaching digital citizenship.

Part 2 : Working in the same groups from the 'Pen & Paper' portion, have the students brainstorm and write a script for a short video that they can self-produce on digital citizenship.

Part 3 : After approving the scripts, allow each group to work flexibly and creatively to shoot and edit a video that will both showcase what they've learned on digital citizenship and engage their creativity. The most basic video editing tool is iMovie and is built in to all Apple/Mac products. As for shooting the videos, any phone/tablet camera will work! Most importantly, allow your students to work through technical and creative issues, which will only further reinforce the idea of being a great citizen both on and offline.

Part 4 : When the videos are completed, have each group post their project to YouTube, and wrap with a mini film festival of their work. The 'posting' step will act as reinforcement as students will have to reflect on the product they have made and decide whether or not it is suitable to be posted online. After watching all of the student films, engage in a class discussion, being sure to summarize what the students knew, now know, and what they will do going forward to be good digital citizens.

  1. I really like your lesson plan! I had a hard time finding an article that I thought was informative but also easy for students to read and understand, but the one you included is perfect! I also really like how you balanced the lesson with technology and non technological components too. The video project is such good idea because it keeps students engaged and forces them to really have an understanding of the content they are covering in their video! I also think that filming a video gives all different types of personalities a chance to shine because some people need to be in front of the camera and some need to be the ones behind it or the ones editing the material. It is a really great project that allows for class presentation while not forcing and students who are uncomfortable with public speaking to do so! Really awesome post!

  2. I love how this lesson plan allows the students to engage with eachother, express themselves, and have dialogue on the topic. There is a great balance of utilizing technology and also writing . The video portion is my favorite part of the lesson. I think that is a fun and creative way to express what they have learned and be assessed without it feeling formal and causing stress.

  3. This lesson plan is truly well done! The entire blog has an easy to navigate layout and an eye catching theme. Going along with that this lesson plan is very neat, easy to read and thorough. I really appreciate the creativity you used and the detail that you put in. I also like your "Creator" section. It breaks down how students will complete the activity and it allows for students to express themselves while showcasing what they have learned in class. I think it is a great way to engage students with their school work.

  4. This lesson plan is so meticulously thought out! I really appreciate all the work that went into it. The article is really intriguing and you articulate your ideas so concisely. Such as the sections with Pen & Paper next to the Creator, showing students you need to do the brunt work then you get to be creative. I love this so much, keep it up!
