INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA IN EDUCATION

The heart of this blog lies in the vision to improve Hawaiian representation in the entertainment industry, both on and off the screen. Just as the internet and social media are vital marketing tools for movies and television shows, students learning and creating digital media will be able to expose their work in the same ways.

Last semester I was fortunate enough to complete Chapman - Dodge College's 'Art and Business of Web Video' course. It allowed me to begin a video series on a topic of one of my greatest passions, Hawaiian culture, and to share this portfolio of work across any and all social media platforms. The series name? Maka'ala Mindset, and you can find it at makaalamindset.com! Along with creating and sharing our work on the internet, our class utilized Twitter and Facebook to brainstorm, provide feedback, and simply connect with each other outside of the physical classroom. Another unique attribute to the course was our interactive syllabus. The syllabus was on a google doc created by the professor, but students could provide comments on what they thought would work well in the course, areas they believed needed more time for instruction, and any suggestions for upcoming lectures. This syllabus style also allowed our professor to be flexible with the course, and for speedy communication when any edits were made. The various means of internet and social media use took this course beyond the walls of Dodge College.

I want to utilize these same techniques in my educational career, as I aspire to inspire the Hawaiian community to share our stories, our history, our culture, and ourselves to the rest of the world. The internet is our little island chain's limitless connection to anyone and everyone anywhere and everywhere.

  1. Hi Jaye!
I love the overall look and design of your blog. The simplicity makes it very easy to read and the pop of color is intriguing to the audience members. I also thought it was a great idea for you to include a link to your online portfolio, which is awesome by the way!
I think it is really cool that you have a history in using technology in education. I have never experienced a class like this, so I will be interested to see what I think of it, as well as your thoughts on this course compared to your previous experiences of using social media to brainstorm, provide feedback, and simply connect with each other outside of the physical classroom. I know you wish to inspire the Hawaiian community to share your stories, history, culture, and individuality to the rest of the world, but in assignments non-related to the Hawaiian community, would you recommend this teaching style to other educators or are you more supportive of a traditional class setting? Furthermore, do you think there is a certain age that students should start to incorporate this kind of learning into their education, or do you think it should start at the beginning of their educational career?

  2. Jaye,

I had a chance to check out your YouTube channel and laughed out loud watching some of your videos! I really hope you will take this and share with your future students how to use YouTube in such a way to not only shape your brand but showcase and highlight your learning! Great job!
